About The Cassia

Cassia is a genus of flowering plants in the Fabaceae family. It is native to the Indian subcontinent, southern Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. It is known by the common name “Amaltas” in its native region. It is an ornamental flowering plant commonly found along railway stations, bus stations, airports, and railway lines. The tree also shows medicinal properties and is used to cure constipation.

Appearance

Cassia can grow up to an average height of 10 ft. The large dark green leaves are pinnately compound. The tree blooms in summer and gets covered with golden yellow flowers. It is also called the Golden shower tree due to its golden flowers. The flowers have a mild scent. The tree is leafless till the blossoms appear on it. At the end of the flowering season, leaves start appearing on branches. The fruits are in the form of pods which turn black on ripening.

Growing Conditions and Care

Cassia fistula is a low-maintenance tree. It must be grown in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Don’t let water stand around the tree. There must be at least a 3-4 ft. distance between each tree and also the other plants around. If you are planning to grow the tree in a pot or container, use a large container with standard potting soil.

Cassia thrives in direct and full sunlight. It requires at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. Lack of sunlight or partial shade may result in poor flowering or yellow leaves. Watering the plant once a week is enough to maintain moist soil. Once the plant becomes established, it only requires watering during dry seasons.

It is good to prune the tree during the growing season. Remove the dead and dry branches to encourage healthy wood. Prevent your plant from frost as it can kill the foliage. If possible, take the container outside and place it near a window.
