About The Cordyline (Hawaiian Ti)

Cordyline (Ti) is an evergreen flowering plant commonly used as a decorative plant in outdoor gardens or landscapes. Ti belongs to the family of Asparagaceae. It is cultivated for food, medicine, and also for making ornaments.

This plant also has great cultural importance for the animistic religions of Austronesian and Papuan people living in Island Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, Papua New Guinea, and New Zealand. It is famous among landscapers due to its bright colors providing an attractive look to the area.

Appearance

Hawaiian Ti is a decorative plant that is mostly grown in outdoor gardens but also can be used as a houseplant. The long, spikey, and colorful leathery leaves create a catchy look. The leaves can be found in green, red, white, yellow, purple, and mixed purple-red tones. The plant bears pink, white, or white lavender flowers and berries in the early summer. The cup-shaped flowers have a scented and sweet smell that attracts butterflies to your garden.

Growing Conditions and Care for Cordyline (Ti)

Cordyline prefers bright light to grow to full potential but not direct sunlight. It can also be grown in moderate light or partial shade. The plant can be grown both outdoors and indoors and is ideal for outdoor gardens or backyard landscapes. Additional humidity is preferred to provide them with the required environment.

In appropriate conditions, the plant can grow up to 4.5 meters (15 feet), forming an attractive, eye-catching, and spirally arranged cluster with elongated leaves at the tip of a slender trunk. The long, spikey, and leathery leaves can appear in several different color shades. The plant is not only used for decorative purposes but also bears medicinal properties used in traditional medicines. The colorful leaves are also used for making ornaments.

Cordylines are well-known self-cleaning plants. They require low maintenance and care once grown to full. If you are growing it indoors in a pot or tray, provide the preferred humidity. Otherwise, the roots and leaves may get rotten. The one point that must be kept in mind is that it is not a drought-tolerant plant. Therefore, it requires regular watering during summer that can be changed to once in two days in winter.
