About The Desert Rose

Desert Rose is a poisonous genus of flowering plants belonging to the Apocynaceae family. The plant is also known by its botanical name ‘Adenium Obesum’. This plant is common in tropical and subtropical regions of eastern and southern Africa and Sahel regions south of the Sahara. It is an evergreen plant with a thick succulent trunk. Due to its attractive look and beautiful flowers, this genus is widely used as an ornamental plant in outdoor landscape projects.

Appearance

Desert Rose can grow up to 12 inches per year in favorable conditions. It has a thick Succulent trunk and thin, delicate leaves. The dark green leathery leaves are spirally arranged and clustered towards the tips of the shoots. The flowers are mostly pink in color but differently colored flowers can be achieved with hybridization. The garden blooms with beautiful five-petaled flowers in summer.

Growing Conditions and Care

Grow desert Rose in well-drained, sandy, or gravelly cactus soil. It is best to grow the plant in late spring and summer for better growth. Don’t allow water to stand around the plant and let the soil to dry out completely before watering. The pot or container with the plant must have drainage holes. Soggy or too moist soil can result in root rot.

During summer, water the plant twice a week to prevent it from drying out. It is good to water when the top two inches of soil become dry. Minimal watering is required during winter. It is enough to water once a month. Although, the plant does not need to be fertilized most often, feeding poor soil with a little amount of a balanced fertilizer will promote growth. It is enough to fertilize once a year.
