About The Tree

Lemon is an evergreen tree belonging to the flowering plant family Rutaceae. It is native to Asia and is mostly found in Northeast India, China, or Northern Myanmar. The plant is famous for its juice, which is used both for cooking and culinary purposes. Fruit contains 5% to 6% citric acid with a pH of around 2.2.

Popular Varieties

There are several different varieties of Lemon are available. Among them, Persian and Key Lime trees are the most popular varieties in south Florida.

Persian

Persin lime has the scientific name Citrus x latifolia and is also known by its common names such as Tahiti Lime, seedless lime, and Bearss lime. It is the most commonly cultivated species of lime used for commercial purposes. Grow the tree in a sunny place that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight. The soil used for potting must be well-drained.

It is a thornless tree covered with glossy evergreen leaves. The tree bears white flowers in late winter and fruits between June to September. It is better to let the fruit completely ripen on the tree as they have more content of juice.

Key Lime

Key lime is the common name of C. hystrix x C. medica. The tree is native to Southeast Asia. It is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 6-13 feet high. It is a popular species for its characteristic flavor and stronger aroma. This lime is used as a flavoring agent in several drinks and so-called West Indian lime, Mexican lime, Omani lime, or bartender’s lime.

The tree bears dark green leaves, beautiful fragrant flowers, and small green-yellow fruits. This is the best species to grow both in-ground and in pots. Use well-drained soil with a pH between 6.1- 7.8. Dig a deep and wide hole in a sunny location to place the plant. Water the tree frequently to avoid drying. During the growing season, fertilize it with fertilizer.
