The Schefflera Arboricola, also known as the dwarf umbrella tree, is a multi-functional plant that can look great outdoors in your yard or as a houseplant that spruces up your living room. Commonly found as large shrubs around Southwest Florida, specifically Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Naples, and Pine Island, landscapers will use the Schefflera Arboricola to hide out-of-place AC units. The bushes are also used to hide any other outdoor appliance you want to remain out of sight.
The dwarf umbrella tree is evergreen, which means it will always remain a vibrant green in all seasons. Depending on the location of your new Schefflera Arboricola, it can grow anywhere from 4 – 8 feet tall. You can always trim it down to the size of your choosing by pruning the new stems without harming it.
To keep the Schefflera Arboricola happy, it is best to make sure that the soil is moist, but not too wet. In other words, do not let the soil dry out between waterings. The dwarf umbrella enjoys humidity and will thrive in partial sun or full sun, making it perfect for both an indoor and an outdoor plant. Also, consider fertilizing at least three times a year. A good rule of thumb would be to fertilize every 4 months or once a season.
Various cultivars of this plant can be found in our tropical climate, including a lovely variegated cultivar. The dwarf umbrella will also grow the occasional grouping of small yellow flowers that make this plant even more desirable.
Looking for some landscaping options for your new Schefflera Arboricola? Consider these. The dwarf umbrella is perfect for lining bare walls, and taller fences, and for providing a green backdrop to smaller plants. Additionally, you might consider planting several Arboricolas in a row to create a medium-sized hedge. You can also use them as a privacy screen or to create a natural barrier. If you are considering planting near the house, make sure it’s at least 2 to 3 feet from the wall and when planting them together, we encourage you to space them 3 feet apart so they can grow into each other nicely.
