Description of Coconut Palm Tree

The iconic Coconut Palm Tree, also known as the Cocos nucifera, is one of the most widely recognized palm trees in Southwest Florida. The Coconut Palm is abundant in Cape Coral, Pine Island, Fort Myers, Bonita Springs and all throughout our beloved Southwest Florida area. Landscapers particularly love using the Coconut palm trees for classic Southwest Florida landscaping projects.

Coconut palm trees grow at a moderate rate and can reach 50 feet or more in height. Because of their height, it is advised that coconut palms be installed at least 15 feet from any structures that could be damaged by falling ripe coconuts. Despite this, the height of the coconut palms is often a desired aspect representative of the tropical lifestyle.

Different Types of Cocos nucifera

The most popular varieties of the Cocos nucifera, Green Malayan and Maypan, are both among the hardiest of palms. They have a high tolerance of salt and can withstand difficult drought conditions, particularly when they reach maturity.

The Green Malayan Coconut Palm typically begins to bear fruit when the visible trunk reaches 2 to 3 feet. The Maypan Palm, on the other hand, begins to bear fruit when the visible trunk reaches 6 to 8 feet. Depending on how long you are willing to wait for coconuts, either of these popular choices would be a great fit for your Southwest Florida home.

There are many landscape uses for the Cocos nucifera, in addition to the coconut itself. If you are looking for an anchor for a bed low-growing plants, the cocos nucifera will happily help to anchor those plants. They are also great for flanking the entrance of your driveway or lining your property. If you would like to line your property with coconut palms, it is recommended that they be spaced 8 feet apart and 10 to 15 feet from any structures.
