About The Gardenia

Gardenia is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the coffee family called Rubiaceae. The plant is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, the Pacific Island, Madagascar, Asia, and Australia. This evergreen plant is also known for its fragrant flowers and is cultivated by florists. It is also grown as an ornamental plant. It also acts as a medicinal plant that might reduce insulin resistance, helping to prevent high blood sugar.

Appearance

Gardenia is an evergreen plant with an average height of 1-15 meters. The broad, dark green, and glossy leaves have a leathery texture. It bears solitary flowers that mostly appear in clusters. The creamy-white or pale yellow flowers contain 6-12 lobes that are 5 to 12 cm broad in diameter.

Growing Conditions and Care

Gardenia grows well in moist and well-drained soil which is consistently damp not soggy. This plant performs great in full sun. Although the plant prefers full sun, it is also good to keep it in shade during hot summer days. The flowers bloom best in the morning sun and afternoon shade. If you are growing the plant indoors, it is good to place the pot near a window where it can receive at least 4-5 hours of sunlight daily.

As we discussed, this plant loves consistently moist soil but is not soggy. It is enough to water the plant thrice a week to keep the moisture. On hot summer days, it may require regular watering to avoid dry leaves. It is also very important to keep in mind that over-watering can also harm the plant, resulting in falling flowers and pale yellow leaves.

If you are choosing this plant for indoor beauty, feed it every two weeks with a balanced houseplant fertilizer that is rich in micronutrients, especially iron. To encourage continued blooming, cut off the faded or dried flowers just below the leaf node.
