About The Oleander

Oleander is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the Apocynaceae family. The plant is also popular by its botanical name ‘Nerium’. The tropical evergreen plant is common in subtropical regions around the world. Most people use it as an ornamental plant in landscaping projects. This evergreen plant is also considered a medicinal plant, used in heart failure, cancer, epilepsy, and other health conditions.

Appearance

Oleander can grow up to 20 feet tall in favorable conditions. The plant bears flowers in early summer to mid-autumn with large clusters of single and double blossoms. The flowers vary in colors from pure white through pale yellow, salmon, peach, and pink to burgundy red. The dark green smooth leaves are thick and leathery. The garden blooms with flowers throughout the year with peak blooming in summer.

Growing Conditions and Care

Oleanders must be grown in well-drained soil with a neutral pH between 6.5 to 7.5. It is tolerant to challenging climate conditions such as drought, salty air, heat, and urban pollution. This plant prefers full sun to grow well but can tolerate partial shade. In the freezing season, move it indoors to prevent it from frosting.

Oleanders are known to be drought-tolerant but occasional deep watering can encourage better growth. It is enough to water the plant twice or thrice a week or when the top 2 inches are felt dry. If you are growing it in a container, keep repotting to avoid root rot. Also, the pot must be provided with holes for proper drainage.

The plant bloom with new growth in summer. It is good to prune it in the early spring. Also, keep on removing dead and dry flowers to encourage longer blooms. To encourage branching, cut off the stem tips after flowering. Although, Oleanders do not need to be fertilized most often, feeding poor soil with a little amount of a balanced fertilizer will promote growth. It is enough to fertilize once a year.
